Rugali Filterkaffee

Fruity and Fair

A FRUITY COFFEE

WITH A CHOCOLATEY AFTERTASTE

You open your window – rays of sunlight touch your face, birds are singing, and the first daffodils are blooming in the meadow outside. This is what Rugali tastes like, our first coffee from Rwanda, the result of our partnership with Muraho Trading, which supports local farmers. This Arabica tastes as vibrant as the first days of spring feel! Notes of zesty currant and white grape vitalize you, while a gentle, chocolatey aftertaste sweetens your day.

Muraho Trading

Since the beginning of 2024 we have been supporting six new coffee projects worldwide with the Coffee Circle Foundation e.V., including our first in Rwanda. Muraho Trading is a young and innovative export company run by two Rwandan brothers, Karthick and Gaudam Anbalagan, who passionately produce specialty coffee. For them, it’s about more than just excellent coffee: they want to put the people, the origin, and the exceptional quality of the beans at the center, and make the uniqueness of Rwanda accessible to everyone worldwide. Through this partnership, we discovered Rugali coffee and knew immediately: we had to share this Rwandan specialty with you!

Rugali Filterkaffee Hario v60

Preparation Tips

Due to its medium roast, Rugali is suitable for all filter coffee methods. We particularly recommend preparation via pour-over, for example, with the Hario V60. The Aeropress or the classic coffee machine also perfectly bring out the flavors of this coffee. Its roast creates a harmonious balance that unfolds excellently both pure and in combination with milk or milk alternatives.

Medium and Fresh Roast

Rugali is freshly roasted weekly in our Berlin roastery. Our roast masters carefully monitor the process to catch the ideal moment when the sweetness and complex aroma of the coffee fully develop. The roasting profile is always individually tailored by our experts to the respective coffee variety.

Origin

The Rugali Washing Station is located on the shores of Lake Kivu, amidst the thousand hills of Rwanda. Every Wednesday, the Rugali markets take place in the Rugali region – the perfect opportunity to experience rural life and Rwandese culture up close. Cows, goats, chickens, pigs, and fish are transported and traded by the local community in various ways. An abundance of fresh organic fruits and vegetables is also sold there.

The Washing Station is operated by our partners at Muraho Trading Company. This export company is the passion project of two Rwandan brothers. They want to show the world what specialty coffee from Rwanda truly means: for them, the people and the land itself are the main focus.

Rwanda has come very far from the horrific genocide against the Tutsi that took place in 1994 to the striving country it is today. This unbelievable turnaround is a huge credit to the Rwandese people and has therefore become a symbol of hope – not only for Rwanda, but for the whole world.

This is particularly evident in Rugali: Despite its short existence, it has developed from a small Coffee Washing Station to one of the most respected and impactful in its community. This is mainly due to the tireless efforts of the 1150 farmers and their families. The coffees from this station are of exceptional quality and have already been used in several national and international barista competitions. Additionally, the Washing Station is a true pioneer: Rugali and its little sister Kilimbi were the first stations in Rwanda’s history to produce and export natural and honey-processed coffee legally.

Processing: Natural

Processing the cherries as carefully as possible is the highest priority for the team at Rugali Station. After picking, the ripe red coffee cherries are separated from unripe cherries by so-called floating in a water bath and then dried on raised drying beds for about three weeks in the sun. During this time, the cherries are regularly turned by hand for even drying and defective cherries are sorted out. During the dry season, temperatures reach 28 °C to 30 °C during the day, while they drop to 12 °C to 15 °C at night. This temperature range is ideal for slow and even drying. Natural-processed coffees are ideal for fans of filter coffees with fruity and complex flavors, as well as exceptional aromas.
